Artist Statement:
Zines tell a visual story or some sort of information that the artist wants others to understand. For the zine project, I explored the idea of where ingredients come from when making a chocolate cake. From my brainstorm blog I had a very basic idea of what I wanted to convey in my zine. However, I did not know how each page of my zine would turn out until I started producing them. I went with the flow and tried not to constrain myself in my process I believe the mixture of photoshop with the style of drawing that was utilized go well together. I began my process with photoshop and cutting out images and lining them up on the page. I then switched to procreate where I took images and drew out the shapes and added shading often through color blocking. Each page of my zine alternates between photoshop and procreate. As for my inspiration, I have always had a passion for baking and cooking, and I wanted to incorporate one of my passions with a simple idea on paper. The format of my zine is very predictable and follows the same pattern throughout. I think it was successful because the use of arrows allows the viewer to move their eyes across the page and understand the process. I find it very interesting to think about where our food comes from. If you really think about it, the processes that food have to go through to become the form that is in a grocery store is quite long. Although I think I presented my idea well on paper, there are a few things that I wish I had incorporated into my designing. One thing that I was torn on when making this zine was whether I should cut and draw everything and have it stand on its own. In the beginning, I was thinking to take a more collage approach and have the elements overlapping and more integrated together. But then I thought that it might be difficult to show the process from one side to the other if was all jumbled. I think it would have been more visually interesting if I had used the space in a different manner. Although my piece did not have a deep meaning, it still conveyed my idea through successful visual representations.
