This article is talking about how the Museum of Modern Art in New York is expanding and showing more digital art. Some of the blockchain based artwork sold for thousands of dollars the museum saw this as a opportunity to rebound after being hit pretty hard financially by the pandemic. The curation team talks about how they needed to catch up to the rest of the world through digital art and technology. Until recently many museums were not in favor of shifting a large portion of their space to digital art and rather likes the traditional paintings and sculptures. But because of the pandemic many of the museums became more open to projects involving blockchain, VR and AI. Recently NFT have been on the decline in popularity and often are questioned and associated with scamming or speculation. However, NFTs have opened the door for digital art and allowing it to come more into the spotlight. A curator at Whitney Museum talks about how the museum has already collected several NFTs. She has also pushed to have more digital art in the museum though a program to support this. A lot of artists are selling their art as NFTs to experiment and are working with museums to feature their work. In a recent show at the Museum of Modern Art to showcase how artists are using new web technologies the curators gave a free NFT to each attendee from a commissioned artist. Digital art has not gotten a limelight especially in major art galleries in large quantities, so it is very exciting that some of the big museums are exploring these possibilities.
